Wrestling
NEW DELHI: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has appealed to the Indian Olympic Association (WFI) to include the sport as a medal event in the forthcoming National Games in Guwahati. The 33rd National Games will be held from February 9, 2007. In a press release issued on Monday, the WFI said that it came as a shock to the federation when it was informed that wrestling was not included in the Guwahati National Games schedule. The WFI is currently functioning under Delhi High Court-appointed Observer, Justice J.K. Mehra (retd.), after the IOA had de-recognised the federation and in turn the WFI approached the court. Following the snub from the court, the IOA had not taken wrestling team to the recently concluded South Asian Games in Colombo. The WFI, however, said that it has been sending wrestlers to other international competitions duly approved by the Court Observer, the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India (SAI). It said that the WFI was invited to attend the Games Technical Committee meeting in Guwahati where it was told to its representative by the IOA President, Suresh Kalmadi, that wrestling has been deleted from the games schedule.
