BANGALORE: Nationals, Mysore, registered an exciting 58-56 victory over Vivek Nagar BC in the State `C' division basketball league championship, which began at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here on Monday. Nationals, which led 14-6 in the first quarter, soon ran into stiff resistance from its rival. But it hung on to a slender lead in the third and final quarter to emerge winner. Nandan put up a fine display for Nationals, accounting for 24 points while Manjunath (16) impressed for Vivek Nagar. Meanwhile, IBBC, Rovers (Dharwad) and KS Hegde Club (Mangalore) posted facile wins in their opening ties. The results: Nationals, Mysore 58 (Nandan 24, Naveen 14, Puneeth 11) bt Vivek Nagar 56 (Manjunath 16, Sathya 11, Santosh 9); IBBC 39 (Shivaraj Kumar 12, Naveen 10) bt Haveri BC 16 (S.A. Naik 8); Rovers, Dharwad 35 (Sunil 15, Naveen 8) bt Ulsoor SU 26 (Tulsi Ram 8); KS Hegde Club, Mangalore 42 (Nithin 23, Keerthi 8) bt BCYA 23 (Goutham 7).
Pavitra is champion
Pavitra Jagtap, with four points from five rounds, claimed the title in the State women's chess championship, which concluded at the State Youth Centre here on Sunday. In the fifth and final round, Pavitra defeated Nisha N. Patkar (3.5) of Shimoga, who finished third after her sister, Neha. The top four players Pavitra, Neha, Nisha and Vidya will represent the State in the National women's championship scheduled to be held at Chennai from September 19 to 26. The final standings: 1. Pavitra Jagtap (4); 2. Neha N. Patkar (4); 3. Nisha N. Patkar (3.5); 4. Vidya Nachappa (3); 5. Megha Jain (3).
Inter-school hockey
Rotary Club (Indira Nagar) will conduct the annual G.S. Randhawa memorial inter-school hockey tournament at the KSHA Stadium here from September 22. The final will be held under floodlights on September 29. Further details can be had from Rtn. Harish Kumar Anand, Ph: 9845010898.
Inter-collegiate basketball
BES Evening College of Arts and Commerce, Jayanagar, will conduct an inter-collegiate basketball tournament for men and women from September 22 to 25. Entries close on September 15 and details can be had from BES College, Ph: 26638415.
Senior division volleyball
The State senior division volleyball championship for men will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here from October 3. About 12 teams are expected to participate in the tournament. All the teams should confirm their entries by September 20. Meanwhile, the State `B' division tournament will be held from September 25 to 30. Entries close on September 18. For details, contact K. Satyam in semifinals
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Satyam entered the semifinals of the team event in the KBA inter-corporate badminton championship on Sunday. TCS defeated Thomson 2-0 and Satyam prevailed over Oracle 2-1. In women's singles, Smitha Rao, Aditi, Sangeetha and Mehrunnisa entered the semifinals. The results (quarterfinals): Team event: TCS bt Thomson 2-1; Satyam bt Oracle 2-1; Hewlett Packard bt Infosys 2-1; Fidelity bt Motorla 2-1. Women's singles (best of 30 points): Smitha Rao (Thomson) bt Kavita (Wipro) 30-5; Aditi (Oracle) bt Madhumitha (TCS) 30-24; Sangeetha (HP) bt Roji (Oracle) 30-3; Meherunnissa (Infosys) bt Pallavi (HP) 30-27.
