Advani wards off Merchant's challenge

MUMBAI: Pankaj Advani's temperament, put to test by Yasin Merchant in the best-of-seven frames, came to the fore when it mattered the most as India's ace cueist won 4-3 to consolidate his top spot in the Asian Games snooker trials tournament at the Goregaon Sports Club on Monday.

Manan Chandra and Aditya Mehta were the other notable performers out of the six cueists competing in the event.

Junior National champion Mehta asserted himself in the senior ranks and grabbed a berth on the squad for the Doha Asian Games.

Rafat Habib was the sixth player in the fray, from whom the first four will be shortlisted.

The results:

Pankaj Advani 4 bt Yasin Merchant 3 (34-81(80), 88(68)-0, 65-72, 76(68)-1, 32-63, 71(60)-54, 60-52); Manan Chandra 4 bt Rafat Habib 0 (89(88)-1, 59-48, 65-33, 75(50)-0); Aditya Mehta 4 bt Rupesh Shah 2 (79-37, 1-63, 19-75, 84(63)-42, 78-39, 81-27).

Final standings:

1. Pankaj Advani (69 points), 2. Yasin Merchant (55), 3. Manan Chandra (54), 4. Aditya Mehta (33). — Special Correspondent
