MODERN TEMPLE: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy releasing water from the Peddagedda reservoir in Vizianagaram district on Sunday.
VIZIANAGARAM: Amid protests by tribals and Left parties, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday dedicated the Peddagedda irrigation project to the nation. High drama preceded the Chief Minister's visit to the project site as the police whisked away 10 CPI leaders, including district secretary P. Kameswara Rao from Pachipenta, when they were proceeding to obstruct Dr. Reddy's programme. They were taken to Salur police station and released later. Similarly, at Kesali village where the project is located, police stopped some 500 tribals from proceeding to the venue. The tribals led by CPI (M) district secretary M. Krishna Murthy and Rythu Sangham secretary M. Suryanarayana raised slogans against the Chief Minister and Marketing Minister, B. Satyanarayana. The Left party leaders have been demanding rehabilitation of the affected families. A heavy posse of police personnel was deployed at Kesali village in Pachipenta mandal anticipating trouble from the oustees and Left parties. Notwithstanding the developments, Dr. Reddy after inaugurating the irrigation project constructed at a cost of Rs. 67.67 crores appealed to Opposition parties to desist from inciting project-affected people and creating trouble to derive political mileage.
