BJYM activists ransack convent school

Special Correspondent

They were protesting against a reported occult session

LUCKNOW: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and Shiv Sena activists on Sunday evening ransacked the Loreto Convent School here. The police later arrested three activists.

The activists broke open the gates, damaged the flowerpots and smashed the glasspanes of the chapel and the principal's office. But they were chased away by police. Security has been beefed up around the college.

They were protesting against a reported session held on September 6 to invoke the spirit of Jesus Christ when some students had reportedly become unconscious.

A report published in an English daily on Sunday said Nobo Kumar Mandal of `Chandra Cult' based in Murshidabad, West Bengal, conducted the session in the presence of the Principal, Sister Monica, and around 250 students.

The Catholic Diocese of Lucknow, which manages the institution, has ordered closure of all Christian schools in the city on Monday in protest against the violence. Lucknow District Magistrate Ramendra Tripathi has ordered an inquiry into the reported occult session. The three-member enquiry committee had been asked to submit its report within three days.

Talking to newspersons, Mother Superior of Loreto Convent said their institution took no aid from the Government.

She said though it was mandatory for the students to attend the morning assembly, attendance at special assembly sessions was optional. The Mother Superior said not even a single parent had complained about his child's presence in the special assembly held on September 6.

She alleged that it was a conspiracy to defame the famed institution.
