CHENNAI: Investigation into the case of weapons seizure has been handed over to the Q Branch police, said Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee here on Sunday. The seizure was made when they were being transported from Chennai to Andhra Pradesh on September 8. The Ambattur police registered cases under the Conspiracy,Indian Arms Act. As involvement of naxalites was suspected, the case was handed over to the Q Branch, Mr. Mukherjee said. The Q Branch deals with the activities of banned outfits and monitors persons having contacts with such organisations. Speaking to reporters, the DGP said the seizure of a huge cache of arms in Andhra Pradesh revealed that the consignments were booked from Chennai. Preliminary probe by the Chennai city police revealed that the weapons rocket launchers, empty rocket shells, improvised landmines among other things were despatched on August 10, 2005, May 9, 2006 and May 11, 2006 through a private cargo operator. Six special teams had been formed. They would examine how and from where the weapons came to Ambattur, he said. When asked whether such activities had taken place during the previous regime, the DGP said, "We have mentioned the dates. It tells everything."
Baseless allegation
An official press release issued by the office of the DGP stated, "When all the three consignments carrying weapons had taken place during the previous AIADMK regime, it would be incorrect and mischievous to spread baseless allegation that unlawful activities had resumed in the State. Despite the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai and other threats received, the Government ensured that no untoward incident was reported in the State. The Government would continue to closely monitor all activities of offenders and take stern action. Any attempt to distort the actions of the Government would be dealt with as per law, said the statement.
