Schedule announced for water release

Special Correspondent

The Chief Minister will inaugurate Peddagadda project in Vizianagaram district on Sunday, Suramplem project in East Godavari district the next day and release water to Naglonda district from the AMR project on September 20

HYDERABAD: In a significant step towards fulfilling the Congress Government's commitment to create an additional ayacut of 7.52 lakhs during this kharif, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah has announced the schedule for release of water from three irrigation projects.

The dates were approved by the Cabinet at its meeting here on Friday. The Minister told reporters that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would formally inaugurate Peddagadda project in Vizianagaram district on Sunday by lifting the gates of its canal to serve 8,500 acres. Similarly, he would open the gates of Suramplem project in East Godavari district the next day, to provide water to another 10,000 acres.

On September 20, the Chief Minister would not only release water to 50,000 acres in Naglonda district from the AMR project but also lay the foundation-stone for a Rs. 108-crore pumphouse which would serve the low level canal of the project. The canal would be completed and water provided to 50,000 acres by 2008. Mr. Lakshmiah said AMR project project provided irrigation to about 35,000 acres last year. He said Suddavagu project would also be inaugurated shortly with the release of water to about 14,000 acres.

He denied that he had announced the dates to neutralise the Telangana sentiments. He also refuted the charge that increase of discharge capacity of Pothireddypadu regulator would affect Telangana interests. Water from Srisailam could be drawn for Kalwakurthy and Srisailam Left Bank Canal projects of Telangana at 802 ft and 825 ft levels of the dam respectively while it was 841ft for Pothireddypadu which served Rayalaseema.
