Lashkar militant escapes

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: A top commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, who is involved in a double murder case, on Thursday escaped from police custody while being produced in the district court in Pulwama. He snatched a rifle from a policeman and opened fire, resulting in injury to constable Ghulam Qadir.

Reports said a grenade was hurled in the court complex at 2.30 p.m. when Mohammad Altaf Malik alias Pintoo was produced in connection with the kidnapping and murder of railway engineer Sudhir Kumar and his brother Sandeep Kumar on June 22, 2004. Amid the chaos that prevailed, Malik managed to escape from the police party that was escorting him from the central jail here. The militant, who was operating in south Kashmir for the last 16 years, surrendered before the Territorial Army in August 2005. DIG, South Kashmir, Hemant Kumar Lohia, confirmed that the militant had escaped.
