dated September 6, 1956: India's chances in hockey

Mr. Aswini Kumar, Deputy Chef de Mission of the Indian Olympic contingent, said in Melbourne on September 5 that preparations made for the reception of the Indian hockey team were better than at any previous Olympiad. Mr. Aswini Kumar, who is a Deputy Commissioner General of Police and a former Punjab hockey player, told correspondents that the hockey pitches, both at the Olympic village and at the main Oval, should play very fast - much faster than was the case in Helsinki and London. He expected Germany, Holland, England and Pakistan to provide again the main opposition to India on the hockey field, but said Australia might well prove the dark horse.
