Ambur Educational Society set for centenary celebrations

President Abdul Kalam to inaugurate function on Monday

CHENNAI: The Ambur Muslim Educational Society (AMES), which runs six schools in Ambur, is celebrating its centenary year. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will be inaugurating the three-day function starting on Monday in Ambur.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will preside over the inaugural ceremony. The platinum jubilee of Mazharul Uloom Boys Higher Secondary School, one of the schools run by the society, will also be celebrated along with the centenary celebrations of AMES.

T. Rafeeq Ahmed, chairman of the centenary celebration committee, said Mazharul Uloom Aided Primary School (Boys) was established in 1905 with 15 students. Now, around 6,500 students are studying in the group of schools.

On Monday Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav will inaugurate an educational exhibition. An educational conference with speakers, including D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, and Kamal Sheriff, former dean of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, will be held the next day.

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, and the Vaniyambadi MLA, H. Abdul Basith, will be the chief guests of `Urdu Mushaira', a poetry meet to be held on Tuesday.

A seminar on the empowerment of women through education will be held on Wednesday.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswamy will participate in the valedictory function on Wednesday.

Mr. Ahmed said that AMES also plans to construct a science block for the school for boys and an academy to provide vocational training for women at a cost of Rs.2.5 crore as part of the centenary celebrations.
