S. Ramachandran appointed Madras varsity Vice-Chancellor

S.P. Thyagarajan's tenure comes to an end on September 6

Chennai: S. Ramachandran, Director of the Centre for Research and the Institute for Ocean Management in Anna University, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras.

He will serve for a period of three years from the date of his assumption of office, a Raj Bhavan release said on Wednesday. Mr. Ramachandran will take over from Vice-Chancellor S.P. Thyagarajan, whose tenure comes to an end on September 6.

Prof. Thyagarajan said he had personally invited the Chancellor-Governor and other dignitaries for the inauguration of the 150th year celebrations of the university by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam scheduled for September 4. Mr. Kalam will declare open the renovated Senate House. The Project Renovation was led and completed by Prof. Thyagarajan.

The Vice Chancellor-designate said his tenure would focus on research in areas of everyday application. He would accord top priority to modern scientific disciplines such as microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology that were industry and job-oriented.

Prof. Ramachandran, who hails from Tachanallur in Tirunelveli district, has over two decades of experience in research and administration. The 51-year-old holds a Ph.D in Marine Sciences from Annamalai University and a Ph.D in Oceanography from the University of Miami, Florida. He heads the Research Board of Anna University and has published several research papers and a book on coastal zone management.

His other areas of interest include remote sensing, marine pollution and harbour management.
