CHENNAI:
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Tuesday started the demolition of the top three floors of the building of TCS Textiles Ltd on Usman Road at T.Nagar.
The Supreme Court on Monday declined to interfere with a Madras High Court order issued last week calling for the demolition.
Workers from the CMDA and the Chennai Corporation tore through the top three floors of the 8-storeyed building using electrical cutters, welding equipment and hammers.
Senior CMDA officials, including a chief planner, senior planner and deputy planner, supervised the work since morning.
Officials said that the demolition exercise would be completed in three days.
Several policemen kept dispersing the crowd that gathered to see the demolition work.
As the High Court has quashed regularisation of all unauthorised structures buildings approved after February 28, 1999, officials say more such structures will be pulled down.
