Ujjain/Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday took over the probe into the attack on college teachers at Ujjain leading to the death of one of them during college union polls. The Congress has called a State-wide bandh on September 5 and street protests escalated demanding the arrest of those responsible for the incidents. Ujjain Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad had sought a CID probe into the death of H.S. Sabharwal at the Madhav college on August 26, following which it took over the investigations, official sources said in Bhopal. Inspector-General of Police (CID) M.P. Dwivedi, who has rushed to Ujjain to oversee the probe, has been asked to submit a report within 24 hours, the sources said. Mr. Sabharwal, who was supervising student union elections with his two colleagues, was attacked by unruly students, allegedly belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad after he cancelled the polls following charges of irregularities. Following the attack, Mr. Sabharwal died and a post-mortem report confirmed that he sustained two broken ribs and bleeding lungs that caused his death, police said. A magisterial probe was ordered into the incident and five students were arrested for manhandling Mr. Sabharwal's colleague M. L. Nath. The Government suspended three police officers on Monday. Demanding a ban on the ABVP for its alleged involvement in the attack on the teachers, the Congress party's frontal wing NSUI staged protests in several places. The Madhya Pradesh Government College Teachers Association wore black badges and teachers of two to three colleges marched through the streets of Bhopal and Ujjain to protest against the attack on the professors.
