HYDERABAD: Vacant seats in minority engineering colleges will be filled by Convenor, EAMCET-2006 admissions, with relevant minority candidates first and the remaining seats with non-minority candidates. A statement from M.D. Christopher, Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), said the decision was taken after minority colleges approached the council to fill the seats that remained vacant after the associations of minority institutions completed their counselling. He, however, made it clear that the admissions would be in accordance with the G.O. No. 1 of the 2004. He said the seats have not been surrendered to the Government or taken over by it but the admissions are being done on behalf of the managements. It means the minority managements cannot blame the Government in future if they lose their minority status if the mandatory 70 per cent seats are not filled by the minority candidates concerned. Officials said two Muslim minority colleges and 13 Christian minority colleges have represented to the Government for this. Five Christian minority colleges have decided go with the EAMCET Convenor from the first day itself. This year 6,073 Muslim candidates cleared EAMCET while 10,870 seats were available in 38 Muslim minority colleges. While 2,560 Christian minority candidates have passed there are 8,605 seats in 21 Christian minority colleges.
