Jayashree shocks Mary

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu girl P.K. Jayashree stunned top seed Mary Ann Gomes in the second round of the Parsvnath National junior (under-19) chess championship here on Thursday.

Mary, a two-time National women's runner-up and a member of the Indian Olympiad squad in Turin in June, failed to handle a calculated kingside offensive and surrendered in 39 moves.

The results:

Boys: Second round: Swayams Mishra (1) lost to Abhijeet Gupta (2); G. Rohit (2) bt Dheeraj Kumar (1); N. Surendran (1) lost to D. Harika (2); G.N. Gopal (2) bt R.K. Ranjith (1); Hemant Sharma (1.5) drew with Rahul Sangma (1.5); B. Adhiban (2) bt Swapnil Dhopade (1); Fenil Shah (2) bt S.P.
