Rohan, Nischita reign supreme

MANDYA: Rohan Castelino and G.M. Nischita reigned supreme in the State badminton championships, at the PET Stadium here on Thursday.

Rohan retained the men's singles title with a 22-20,21-17 victory over Mohit Kamath. The contest had its interesting moments with Kamath challenging the top seed with guile and guts.

Trailing initially, Kamath rallied to keep pace with Rohan till 16-all. He then took control at 19-17 and again led 20-19, before rushing his strokes. Rohan levelled at 20-all and took the next two points.

In the second game, it was Rohan all the way. He kept punching his half-smashes, maintained a steady pace and raced to a 7-1 lead. There was simply no looking back as he charged towards the title.

Nischita's talent was in full bloom when it mattered most. She won both the women's title and the U-19 crown. In the women's final, she defeated top seed V. Ruth Misha 21-12, 15-21, 21-16. Earlier in the day, she had the better of Ashwini Ponnappa 21-17, 21-18 to clinch the U-19 title.

Women: Singles: G.M. Nischita bt V. Ruth Misha 21-12, 15-21, 21-16. Doubles: Ashwini Ponnappa & Nitya Sosale bt Nischita & Varsha Belwadi 21-23, 21-14, 21-18. U-19: Singles: Nischita bt A. Ponnappa 21-17, 21-18. Doubles: A. Ponnappa & Nitya Sosale bt Nischita & Ruth Misha 21-18, 21-19. U-16: Doubles: Adfa Taqui & Shruthi Sridhar bt K. Sonal More & Sayali Malgave 21-12, 21-15.

Mixed doubles: A. Ponnappa & Harshil Shah bt Saumya Padhye & Guru Prasad 21-14, 21-18.
