Cameras to be installed on Howrah bridge

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Closed-circuit television cameras will be installed on the Howrah bridge, renamed Rabindra Setu, as part of an integrated vessel-tracking surveillance system,

According to Kolkata Port Trust sources, the cameras, with a sweep radius of 50 km, will help to monitor the movement of vessels along the Hooghly, which separates the city from Howrah.

Stepped up vigil

A control room, manned by the Central Industrial Security Force, will also be set up to track the movement of inland water traffic.

The surveillance system is proposed to ward off security threat and to step up vigil at entry points to the city. The security system is imported from Norway.

Closed-circuit television cameras have already been installed at the Howrah and Sealdah railway stations, two other major entry points to Kolkata.
