CHENNAI: Can you identify people's occupations by looking at where they live on a map? Or, which type of masonry would be economical for building houses at a certain place? School students in 106 teams put their heads together to crack questions by interpreting the symbols given in the topographical map at the Survey of India-National Cartographic Association's State-level map quiz on Tuesday. The hall at SBOA School at Anna Nagar was filled with excitement, as students answered questions ranging from basic geography to cartographic concepts. Most participants said they found the crossword puzzle and reading maps interesting.
Practical knowledge
Besides theoretical questions, the quiz also tested their practical knowledge with questions such as: what time must the police in Chennai arrest an accused who boarded a flight at London at 12 p.m.? Several teams from Velammal matriculation or SBOA knew by heart the latest geographical trends. It helped them solve questions on the latest Indian satellite for mapping with high resolution (cartosat), remote sensing and aerial photography. The quiz was simultaneously conducted in 11 centres in the city, besides in places such as Coimbatore and Kalpakkam across the State. The contest, developed by M. Dharmaraj, Director of Survey of India, Tamil Nadu branch, aimed at creating awareness about map education and daily use of geography among students, said M. Stalin, Deputy Director of Survey of India. This year, the participation went up to 2,200 students, that testifies to their enthusiasm, he added. The finals would be conducted in October and the State winners would compete with the other States' winners. The three winning teams would be awarded in the INCA international conference at New Delhi in November.
