Vishnu Vardhan advances

NEW DELHI: Vishnu Vardhan played fluently to beat Vivek Shokeen 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the first round of the ITF Satellite tennis circuit third leg at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

In a battle of two equally talented boys training under the AITA scheme, Vishnu started very well, but could not sustain the momentum in the second set when Vivek recovered ground with a quality display.

Into the decider, Vishnu played like a man possessed and broke Vivek in the second game at love, which eventually proved decisive. Vishnu smacked a smart overhead on matchpoint and threw his racquet in relief at the net.
