KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is taking all steps to control the spread of typhoid in West Kochi, according to Mayor Mercy Williams. The Mayor told a Corporation Council meeting on Saturday that discussions were held with the Chief Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority on the issue. The Authority would specially chlorinate the water supplied to West Kochi. Health workers would intensify sanitation programmes in the area. K.J. Maxi, Health Standing Committee chairman of the Corporation, said the Corporation was taking all necessary steps to contain the situation. The Mayor said damaged roads in the city would be repaired before Onam. The roads could not be repaired owing to the continuing rains, she said.
Din over remark
The council witnessed a din over some remarks made by the Mayor in an interview given to a Malayalam television news channel on Saturday. The Mayor reportedly mentioned that she was functioning in a male-dominated atmosphere and was unable to take any affirmative action. However, the Mayor said she never made any remark that there was any male chauvinism in the CPI(M) or any other party. She also denied the reports that she had complained against councillors or Corporation officials.
