Reduction in Eamcet cut-off marks flayed

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The State Council of All India Students Federation (AISF) has opposed reduction in the qualifying mark for Eamcet from 45 to 40 and threatened to launch a Statewide agitation if the decision is not withdrawn.

The State AISF general secretary M. Vemaiah and AIYF general secretary G. Eswaraiah said it was shameful that the Government bowed to the pressure of private engineering colleges and reduced the qualifying mark to fill seats in their colleges. The Government also reduced intermediate percentage from 60 per cent to 50 per cent to be eligible for a seat in under management quota. These decisions would affect the standard of technical education, they said.

Last year, about 20,000 engineering seats remained vacant and yet new colleges, in spite of protests from students' organisations, were being sanctioned by AICTE. This only proved that the Government was only interested in commercialisation of education rather than providing quality technical education, they said.
