Three held, counterfeit currency seized

SALEM: The CB-CID Police arrested three persons and seized counterfeit notes worth Rs. 2 lakh in Rs. 100 denomination on Wednesday night.

A team of police personnel, which was patrolling on the LIC road, checked the baggage of Selvaraj (44) of Kanyakumari district and found the counterfeit notes. He was arrested. The preliminary enquiry revealed that the spurious notes were brought from Chennai. The police also arrested Murugesan (27) of Thangayur in Sankagiri taluk and Veerasekaran (43) of Nagapattinam district who came to Salem to receive the notes from Selvaraj. The police suspected that a well-organised gang was behind this activity. — Staff Reporter

Lawyers boycott courts

SALEM: Lawyers in Salem and Namakkal districts boycotted courts on Thursday protesting against a recent circular of the Madras High Court.

The protest was in response to the call by the Federation of District and Subordinate Courts Bar Associations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Members of the Salem Bar Association said it was impossible to have 40 suits in the monthly list of every subordinate court and achieve 75 per cent tackling and disposal. They urged the High Court to withdraw the circular.

They claimed over 3,000 lawyers in the district boycotted the courts.

In Namakkal district, over 700 lawyers participated in the protest. — Staff Reporter

Police custody for Ananda Raj

Ramanathapuram: Paramakudi Judicial Magistrate Abraham Lincoln on Thursday ordered one-week police custody for Bishop Ananda Raj and his wife Daisy in a cheating case.

The District Crime Branch police registered the case based on complaints lodged by Vikkramathithan of Muthalur and Lakshmanan of Kolunthur near here. — Staff Reporter

CRPF constable injured

Coimbatore: A Kerala State Transport Corporation bus on Thursday knocked down a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable on check post duty on Palakkad Road.

According to police, Shivbir Singh (24), hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was on duty at Kuniamuthur on the Coimbatore - Palakkad Road, when the bus proceeding from Coimbatore to Palakkad knocked him down. The injured constable was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Jayalalithaa's charge against Government

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Jayalalithaa on Thursday said her party would soon move the court seeking legal remedy to the "violation of law and convention of the State Assembly."

In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she, as a responsible leader of the Opposition, would not remain a mute spectator to these violations. Dubbing the DMK Government a "minority" one, she said right from May 13 when it assumed office, it had been indulging in "violation of Assembly Rules and anti-people activities." Its activities had resulted in "deterioration of law and order," she said. — Special Correspondent

Refresher course for engineers

CHENNAI: A refresher course for engineers of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board was held in Chennai recently.

The course was organised in the light of the State Government's announcement in the budget regarding establishment of underground sewerage in urban sectors in a phased manner. — Special Correspondent

`Lift ban on toddy tapping'

KARUR: The Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement has reiterated its demand for lifting the ban on toddy tapping. The Movement Coordinator S. Nallasamy told the reporters here on Thursday the State Government should declare toddy as non-alcoholic drink.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 116.28 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 75,488 cusecs and the outflow 24,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Youth, mother killed in hit-and-run accident

TIRUNELVELI: A youth and his mother were killed in a road accident near Paavoorchathram on the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi highway on Wednesday night.

The police said J. Jayaraj (27) of Madaththur near Paavoorchathiram had taken his mother, J. Maria Selvam (46), and his aunt, A. Gnanam (38) of Mariathaaipuram, also near Paavoorchathram, in a motorcycle.

On his return to Madathur, at KTC Nagar, an unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle and sped away. While Jayaraj died on the spot, Maria Selvam died on the way to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. The condition of Gnanam is said to be critical.

The Paavoorchathram police have registered a case.

Mason stabbed to death

TIRUNELVELI: The Valliyoor police are looking for a man, who is said to have stabbed his friend to death on Wednesday night.

The police said M. Maria Lawrence (45), a mason from T. Kallikulam near Valliyoor, had constructed a house for the relative of his friend, V. Sekar alias Rajasekar (47), also a mason from Kizhavanaeri near Valliyoor. As the owner of the house had borrowed Rs. 4,000 from Lawrence, he repeatedly asked Sekar to get the arrears from his relative.

When the issue surfaced on Wednesday night, Sekar stabbed Lawrence on his chest, killing him on the spot.

Vaiko's appeal to Central Government

TIRUNELVELI: A meeting of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres was held in Tuticorin on Thursday.

Addressing the meeting, the general secretary of the party, Vaiko, said the Indian Government should not support the Sri Lankan Government under any circumstance, as it would go only against the Tamils living in the Island nation.

He expressed a hope that the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance would register a significant victory in the local body elections.

The deputy general secretary, Nazareth Durai, Sippipaarai Ravichandran, MP, district secretary, Joel, and former district secretary, Chenguttuvan, spoke.

Private company manager murdered

ERODE: A 43-year-old manager of a soap oil manufacturing company was murdered on Wednesday evening near Surampatty Naal Road. According to the Erode South Police, the manager, Lakshmi Narayanan, was murdered by Ardhanari alias Selvan, 32, who suspected his wife's fidelity. The police said the incident happened when Narayanan was on his way home after work. they added. Soon after the incident, the accused surrendered to the police. - Staff Reporter

Exhibition

ERODE: The Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, will conduct an Open House Exhibition on science and engineering models. The Exhibition starts on Friday. A release from the College says students will demonstrate innovative machinery models in the area of science, engineering, agriculture and other related themes. The College's students have developed over 400 models, it says and adds that students of other engineering colleges in the region and schools are welcome to display their models. The best exhibit will receive a prize on the concluding day on Sunday, the release adds.

Date extended

Dharmapuri: The district administration has

extended the last date for inclusion and deletion of names in the Below

Poverty Line (BPL) list till August 31. In a statement issued here on Thursday, the Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, said the list would be kept on display till August 31. People who have any objections regarding the list can apply to the Block Development Officer (village panchayat) concerned. The BDO would scrutinise the applications and the list of BPL families would be finalised by September.

2,550 litres of illicit arrack seized

Dharmapuri: A total of 18 persons, including eight women, who were involved in brewing arrack were arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police during a raid in the district on Thursday.

Acting on instructions from the Superintendent of Police, H.M. Jayaram, a team conducted surprise

raids in Maarandahalli and A.Mallapuram and seized 2,550 litres of illicit arrack. Two motorcycles used for transporting the arrack were also seized by the police.

The PEW police have registered a case.
