COIMBATORE: Information Technology major Tata Consultancy Services Limited plans to start an offshore development centre here soon.

"We are in dialogue with the Government to get some land to expand our delivery capability here," S. Ramadorai, TCS CEO and Managing Director told reporters here on Thursday.

It planned to take a place on lease to begin operations at the earliest.

TCS global head, sales and operations, N. Chandrasekaran, said the company had short-listed locations. "In six months, we anticipate, it will be up and ready."

Initially, the centre would start with about 500 people and the company planned to scale it up to 1,000 rapidly. The facility would be mainly for international clients.

More recruitment

Mr. Ramadorai said the company would recruit 1,215 people from Coimbatore region this year — 67 per cent more than it did last year. It had "strategic relations" with 12 colleges in the region (Coimbatore and Erode) and was in partnership with the PSG to impart initial learning programme on the campus for TCS recruits.

English language laboratory

It had established an English language laboratory at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology and a German language chair in Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

TCS vice-president and head, global human resources, S. Padmanaban, said this year it would recruit 8,000 people from Tamil Nadu, as against 5,500 last year.
