Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended on Thursday in parts of Saidapet, Tondiarpet and G.P.Road areas between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work.

Elocution contest

Kendriya Vidyalaya in IIT Madras won the first place in the inter-Kendriya Vidyalaya elocution competition on energy security conducted by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation recently.

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tambaram and Kendriya Vidyalaya in CLRI campus won first prize on elocution topics of alternative energy and energy conservation respectively. Eleven city schools participated.

Prayer hall inauguration

`Sopanam', the new building comprising a prayer hall and institute, constructed as part of the socio-charitable activities by Sree Ayyappa Bhaktha Sabha, will be inaugurated on Thursday near the Ayyappa temple at Mahalingapuram.

Quit India Day observed

Students of St. John's International Residential School learnt about freedom struggle movement when Quit India Day was observed in the school last week. Besides culturals and quiz contest, students presented a tableau on `Quit India Yesterday and Today' and a skit.

CPCL's gesture

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) recently provided financial assistance to welfare programmes in villages in and around suburban Manali under its various community development schemes. A press release said the assistance was to the tune of Rs.21 lakh. It included distribution of scholarships to 268 meritorious students, provision of benches, tables and computers to schools, utensils for noon meal schemes and construction of a stage at a playground in Manali. CPCL Managing Director K.K. Acharya distributed the assistance.

House burgled

Gold jewels weighing over15 sovereigns were burgled from the house of a financier at Palavakkam on the East Coast Road two days ago. The burglary came to light when the financier and his family members returned in the evening on Monday. R. Pandian and his family members had locked their house and gone out in the morning. When they returned in the evening, they noticed the grille window removed from its place and the gold jewels stolen. Neelankarai police are investigating.

Mathe-Magic Day

IDPL Matriculation Higher Secondary School, IDPL Township, Nandambakkam will conduct `Mathe-Magic Day' on August 19 on the school premises. The programme will cover abacus workshop for teachers and speed maths workshop for students. Morning session will start at 10 a.m. with an abacus workshop for teachers, professors and principals.
