BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi on Tuesday called upon the people to strive to preserve the unity and integrity of the country.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Chaturvedi, who hosted "At Home" at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of Independence Day, he exhorted men and women to ensure peace for the progress of the country. This would also ensure the welfare of all sections of society.

Mr. Chaturvedi went round the Glass House where dignitaries such as Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh and freedom fighters had gathered.

Exchanging pleasantries with them, Mr. Chaturvedi said he was happy that a large number of personalities serving in different fields of public life had responded to his invitation for the `At Home'.

Dignitaries

Bangalore Mayor Mumtaz Begum, Deputy Mayor Lakshminarayana, Health and Family Welfare Minister R. Ashok, Industries Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu, former Governor of Chattisgarh M. Rama Jois, Chief Secretary B.K. Das, Karnataka Pay Commission Chairman M.B. Prakash, Neeravari and Umasri, MLCs, and senior IAS, IPS and IFS officers attended the function.

Earlier, the Governor felicitated 10 children and one organisation for the services they rendered in their fields of activity.

According to an official, the Governor has been honouring "lesser known" people and organisations, who were unlikely to be recognised by the Government for their efforts. Many retired officers and former legislators and a few men and women from the Christian clergy had also graced for the occasion.

The interesting part of the event was that even after the Governor retreated to his residence, the Chief Minister and the Chief Justice were involved in a serious discussion for about 10 minutes.

A woman devotee of Sri Sai Baba from a foreign country draped the Governor with a saffron cloth and blessed him.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines, Mr. Kumaraswamy assured them of action against a Deputy Commissioner of Police who had allegedly misbehaved with a reporter covering the Independence Day Parade at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Grounds.

An interesting feature at the event was the large gathering of commoners.
