HYDERABAD: A security blanket has been thrown over Secunderabad Parade Grounds, the venue of Independence Day celebrations being held on Tuesday.

Not willing to take any chance in the backdrop of recent threats of possible attacks from Maoists and religious fundamentalist organisations linked to terrorist groups, the police literally took over the grounds a day ahead of the celebrations in which several VVIPs, including the Governor and the Chief Minister, would take part. From Task Force to Quick Reaction Teams to Andhra Pradesh Special Police to City Security Wing, all branches of the Police Department have been pressed into service to check every inch in and around the Parade Grounds. North Zone DCP Shikha Goel said five special check-posts were formed at different points leading to the grounds to filter suspicious persons. "A number of bomb disposal squads, anti-sabotage check teams and sniffer dogs have been examining the area for the past 48 hours to make it sterile from security point of view," she said. Meanwhile, the police intensified patrolling across the city, conducted sudden vehicle-checking at several intersections and subjected commuters to frisking.

Frequent checking

Lodges, railway and bus-stations and places of public and private entertainment were being frequently checked. All officers of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad personally supervised security check-ups.

West Zone DCP Amit Garg personally went around all the shopping malls in his area.
