KATHMANDU: The Nepal Government headed by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has named a new Army Chief amid controversy. Monday's Cabinet meeting appointed Lieutenant General Rukmangat Katuwal as the acting Army Chief of the Nepal Army. The appointment comes after the incumbent chief General Pyar Jung Thapa went on a month-long leave that would culminate in his retirement on September 10. Lt. Gen. Katuwal is currently the number two in the army hierarchy. He is among the top army officials interrogated by the High Level Probe Commission investigating the atrocities committed during the April movement. There is widespread discontent among the public for sparing the army for its alleged role in atrocities.
