Jones's sin

Jones's sin

Dean Jones should have been careful. It is one thing to be apologetic and for the victim Amla to forgive him, but the fact remains it is always better to be careful with one's words. He has sinned publicly but then don't many do that in secret? Deano deserves another chance.

Code of conduct

Racial slurs continue to be hurled on the sports field. The latest to join the list is Dean Jones, the Australian cricketer-turned-commentator. It is time to enforce a strict code of conduct for radio and TV commentators. Professionalism is welcome but not remarks that are totally objectionable.

Outstanding batsman

Mahela Jayawardene's match-winning 123 in the Colombo Test against South Africa must be rated as one of the finest knocks in the history of cricket. Chasing a 300-plus victory target and playing a captain's knock can be the work of only an outstanding batsman. Jayawardene's true class found its expression in a splendid way.

Rise of Monty

The rise of Monty Panesar as the spin option for England is interesting. Still in his early days in Test cricket, Panesar's style and persistence remind one of the crafty Bishan Singh Bedi. His combination with Harmison does not bode well for Australia in the Ashes series later this year.

P. Krishna,

Ambitious

The new chief national coach, Bob Houghton believes that football has a good chance of flourishing in India notwithstanding cricket's premier position in the popularity chart. Still it will be an ambitious project for our football team to work towards qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
