Lalith Babu stuns GM Faruk Bistric

NEW DELHI: Andhra-lad M.R. Lalith Babu opened his account in great style by stunning Bosnia and Herzegovina's Grandmaster Faruk Bistric in the second round of the Abu Dhabi International chess tournament at Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Tejas Bakre outclassed fellow GM and fifth seed Sergei Azarov of Belarus to be among the eight leaders with two points.

In Athens, S. Vijayalakshmi and her sister S. Meenakshi won their opening rounds in the women's section of the Acropolis International chess tournament.

Sriram Jha, however, drew with a lower-rated Greek rival in the Open section, where four of the top seven seeds, including favourite Eduardas Rozentalis (Lithuania), were held.

At Abu Dhabi: (second round): Sergei Azarov (Blr, 1) lost to Tejas Bakre (2); Igors Rausis (Ban, 2) bt Ramnath Bhuvanesh (1); Sergey Kayumov (Uzb, 1.5) bt Aswin Jayaram (0.5); M.R. Lalith Babu (1) bt Faruk Bistric (BIH), Kruttika Nadig (0.5) drew with Saleh Jasim (UAE, 0.5); S.P. Sethuraman (1) bt Khouri Khaled Ahmed (UAE).

At Athens: (first round): S. Vijayalakshmi bt Vera Papadopoulou (Gre); S. Meenakshi bt Mihaela-Veronia Foisor (Rom); Sriram Jha drew with Frangiskos Sigalas (Gre).
