DEVIATION: A canopy put up by a private bank on New Natham Road in Madurai. Photo: G. Moorthy
The space for pedestrians has shrunk in the Temple City. It is a common feature that shopkeepers spread out their paraphernalia on the footpath causing inconvenience to the public. But, of late, in the name of aggressive marketing, private banks, automobile dealers and consumer products agencies have also encroached upon the sidewalks. While their canopies occupy the entire pavement, prospective customers glued to the glib-work of the salesman overflow to roadsides. This is not only a regular feature on wider roads such as New Natham Road, but also in narrow stretches of the busy Melur Road.
