Live operative workshop on robotic surgery

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here is organising a two-day international live operative workshop on "Robotic Urologic Surgery" beginning on July 31.

Mani Menon of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, a pioneer in robotic urologic surgery, has been invited to the workshop. "His technique is practised in most robotic centres all over the world and we are planning an interactive scientific programme and live operative workshop for a wide range of robotic urologic procedures. There will be a discussion on the nuances of this approach in terms of indications, oncology safety and applicability for Indian patients," said Narmada P. Gupta, Organising Chairman and Head of the Department of Urology at AIIMS, at a press conference here over the weekend.

Over a hundred doctors from across the country are expected to take part in the workshop.

Also, the Department of Urology has acquired the "da Vinci S Robotic Surgical System" which is expected to set new standards of excellence in the management of various urological diseases, said Prof. Gupta.

The four-arm technology is the first of its kind in Asia and will help doctors perform advanced procedures. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery has advantages of three-dimensional view and seven-degree freedom of movement for performing surgery.

"The robotic radical prostatectomy operation will minimise complications of operations and ensure a shorter hospital stay and better quality of life," said Prof. Gupta.
