Pravin Mahajan's bail plea deferred to August 1
Mumbai:
A local court on Saturday deferred till August 1, the bail petition of Pravin Mahajan, held on the charge of killing his elder brother and BJP general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, as police opposed his plea, saying the accused may abscond if he was granted liberty.
The petition was adjourned as prosecution sought time to argue the matter.
Pravin urged for bail, saying since the investigations were over and the chargesheet has been filed, he should be granted liberty to prepare himself for defence.
He contended that in the chargesheet the motive for the murder had not been established. Except for his statement to police, there was no evidence to corroborate his involvement in the crime.
Pravin pleaded that the police had not recorded the statement of Rahul Mahajan, son of Pramod Mahajan, who had talked to his father when he was fighting for his life in thehospital.
Pravin pleaded that it was necessary to find out what Pramod had told Mr. Rahul. The police had not recorded the dying declaration of the deceased, he stated in the bail petition.
Police had filed a 650-page chargesheet on July 14 against Pravin in a magistrate's court. The chargesheet contained statements of the accused and 58 witnesses, including Rekha Mahajan, widow of Pramod Mahajan. The case has been committed to sessions court for trial.
