Tiger kills man in Virajpet taluk

Madikeri: A 35-year-old man, Chinnappa, was killed by a tiger at Kolli Hadi, a tribal settlement in the Nittur-Karmad Gram Panchayat limits in Virajpet taluk on Friday, according to information received here. The victim was attacked around 3.45 p.m. about 100 metres from his hut.

Forest officials, police and villagers ventured into the forest and found the half-eaten body of the victim, Superintendent of Police, K. Ramachandra Rao, told The Hindu . The tiger had dragged the body about a kilometre into the forests. Two days ago, a man was attacked and injured by a tiger near Kutta in Virajpet taluk. — Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

in Bhalki taluk

Bidar: Unable to repay his debts, a farmer committed suicide at Khudanpur village in Bhalki taluk on Thursday.

Shivaji Ramji Sangme, 45, consumed insecticide in his fields and died on the way to hospital. He had taken loans totalling Rs 1.5 lakh to cultivate his three acres. Crop failure over three seasons forced him to take the extreme step, family sources said. He leaves his wife and two children.

This is the second suicide by a farmer in a week in the district. — Staff Correspondent

Minister's assurance

to farmers' families

Bidar: The Government will consider funding the education of children of farmers who committed suicide because of crop failure or debt burden, Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur said on Friday.

He was speaking to presspersons at Bhangur village in Bidar taluk after visiting the family of Shantkumar Channashetty, a farmer who committed suicide recently. He promised assistance to the family of the farmer.

Coffee Board reconstituted

BANGALORE: The Coffee Board has been reconstituted with new members being appointed.

The Government of India has appointed the following persons for a period of three years: Prema Cariappa, MP, (Rajya Sabha). Two vacancies for MPs (Lok Sabha) have not been filled, apart from four government officials.

Anil Kumar Bhandari, A.S. Shankare Gowda and D.K. Uday Shankar represent large coffee growers and D.B. Subbe Gowda and P.B. Chandra Shekar small growers.

One of the three places for representatives of coffee trade interests has been given to Harish Bijoor, management consultant. Two members representing curing establishments and four members representing labour interests are yet to be appointed. One of the two representatives of instant coffee manufacturers is Raj Singh of Nestle India Ltd.

Waiting period for Siddaramaiah

Bangalore: The former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who became a primary member of the Congress on Thursday, has to wait before he gets a position in the party.

According to Congress sources, Mr. Siddaramaiah will be considered for a senior position only after he is elected to the Legislative Assembly.

The former Janata Dal (Secular) State president, resigned his seat (Chamundeshwari) before joining the Congress.

Among those who have joined the Congress with him, the former Minister M. Raghupathy and the former MP and IPS officer P. Kodandaramaiah are former members of the Congress. Mr. Raghupathy was a prominent Youth Congress leader before joining the Janata Party.

Tailors to hold `jail bharo' protest

HASSAN: The State Tailors' Association (STA) will hold a "jail bharo" protest on August 1 seeking provident fund and other facilities to tailors across the State on par with other professionals. Announcing this to presspersons here on Friday, secretary, STA, K.S. Anand alleged that the Government had neglected over 10 lakh tailors. He said tailors were feeling insecure owing to globalisation. He urged the Government to provide facilities to tailors on the lines of Kerala Government, which extended provident fund and regular grants. — Staff Correspondent

High schools sanctioned in Hassan district

HASSAN: The Government has sanctioned 26 high schools to Hassan district during the year in three phases, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna has said. Inaugurating the new building of the government high school in Arkalgud taluk on Friday, he said there was a proposal for sanctioning of 40 high schools to the district, however the Government had sanctioned 26 schools. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: A music programme in memory of legendary playback singer late Mohammed Rafi titled "Ek Sham Rafi Ke Naam" will be held at Jagamohan Palace auditorium in the city from 6 p.m. on July 30.

Actor Ratnakar told a press conference that his son Raghavendra Ratnakar and troupe would present popular numbers sung by Mohammed Rafi. On the occasion, homage will be paid to music director Naushad, who passed away recently. The programme will be inaugurated by former Union Minister V. Student ends life

MYSORE: A 19-year-old student of Maharani's Women's College in the city reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her hostel room on Thursday. Police said the deceased R.B. Vinutha, a native of Malavalli taluk, had taken admission to the college hostel only four days ago. The Devaraja police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Counselling for admissions to M.E., M.Tech., and M. Arch. courses for the academic year 2006-07 being conducted by Visvesvaraya Technological University was inaugurated on Jnana Sangam campus here on Friday. Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy inaugurated the counselling. About 542 candidates attended the counselling on Friday and 250 of them confirmed their admissions to various courses. M. S. TUMKUR: Students of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes hostel (degree level) here are facing hardship as the hostel has not opened even 15 days after the colleges reopened. The hostel is located on Belgumba Road here. It is managed by the Department of Social Welfare and attached to Government Arts and Science Colleges here. The students told presspersons here on Friday evening that the hostel should have been opened on June 14. — Staff Correspondent

Train extended

GULBARGA: The South Central Railway has decided to extend the Hyderabad Passenger train (356/355) running between Hyderabad and Chitapur in Gulbarga District to Wadi Junction from Saturday. According to a press Gulbarga MP Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi would flag off the inaugural extended train service from Chittapur at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The train will leave Hyderabad at 4.30 p.m. and reach Chittapur at 8 p.m. and Wadiat 9.30 p.m. In the return journey, it would leave Wadi at 4.15 a.m. and reach Hyderabad at 8.40 a.m. — Special Correspondent

Wages increased

Bidar: The Government has increased the daily wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Assurance Scheme to Rs. 69 from Rs. 62.60 a day. This 11 per cent increase is in accordance with the change in the Consumer Price Index. This applies to all unskilled labourers in the Sampoorna Grameena Rojgar Yojane, and SGRY (Special Unit). Hubli today

HUBLI: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik Belamagi will visit Hubli on Saturday, according to an official release. Mr Yediyurappa will reach Hubli from Athani at 5 p.m. to take part in the felicitation function organised by the federation of Dalit Organisations of North Karnataka at Glass House.

Results of debate

MYSORE: The Mysore Zoo has announced the results of the recently-held debate competition for high school students on "Zoo - A learning centre for students". While R. Moula from St Joseph Central School won the first prize in the English category, Shama Zaid from Good Shepherd Convent bagged the first prize in Kannada category.
