NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte pulled off a timely 34-move victory with black pieces against Canada's Michael Buscar to tie for the Canadian Open chess title at Kitchener on Sunday. Kunte threatened to checkmate his rival with the help of queen and bishop. Buscar resigned to leave Kunte tied with overnight leader Cuba's Walter Arencibia with seven points. On July 16, Pune-based Kunte, along with city-mate Swati Ghate, tied for the second spot in the Quebec Open in Montreal before coming to Kitchener. Rahul Shetty, who upstaged top seeded Russian GM Evgeny Bareev in the second round, finished a creditable 13th after being tied for the 10th spot with five others at six points. In the final round, Shetty defeated Canada's David Wang. Chandrashekhar Gokhale (5.5) drew with lower rated Canadian Michael Barron to take the 18th place. Woman Grandmaster Swati Ghate (5) won against America's Dane Mattson to finish 26th.
