Three held for Mumbai blasts

Two in Bihar, one in Navi Mumbai; mobile phones seized from two

IN THE HANDS OF LAW: The three suspects, arrested in connection with the July 11 Mumbai serial train blasts, at the Anti-Terrorist Squad's office in the city on Friday.

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested two persons in Bihar and one in Navi Mumbai in connection with the train blasts in the metropolis on July 11.

They were remanded to police custody till July 31 by a local court.

The police told the court that Khalid Aziz Raunak Aziz Sheikh and Kamal Ahmed Mohammad Vakil Ansari were arrested from Patna. They belonged to Basupatigaon in Madhubani district, near the Nepal border. Mobile phones and half kg of black powder were seized from them.

Joint Commissioner and ATS chief K. P. Raghuvanshi told the media that the powder would be sent for forensic analysis.

Links in Bangladesh

The police had information that the arrested had links in Nepal and Bangladesh, and that they were part of a larger network.

After the two were brought here around 9 p.m. on Thursday, the police arrested Mumtaz Ahmed Maqbool Ahmed Chaudhary in Navi Mumbai at 10.30 p.m. based on information provided by them.

The police told the court that the three were booked under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324, 325, 326 (voluntarily causing hurt using weapon), 427,436, 437 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy property or to make it unsafe) 120-B (conspiracy) of the IPC and various sections of the Explosives Act and the Indian Railways Act.

The court said the offences were of serious nature and there was a prima facie case.

The three were produced before the court amid tight security and faces covered.
