Southern Railway in final

MADURAI: Defending champion, Southern Railway, Chennai entered the final of the 14th annual Rajamani-Kanagamani Ammal Memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament organised by Reserve Line Sports Club with an emphatic 4-0 victory over G.K. Motors Hockey Club here on Friday.

Southern Railway went into an early lead when Divakar converted a penalty corner. Southern Railway dominated the proceedings and yet had to wait till the 41st minute for the second goal by Vijayes, who connected a cross from Mahendra Singh from left. Divakar again pumped in a penalty corner for the third gaol in the 46th minute and Arumugam completed the tally in the 59th minute off a cross from Karthik from the right.

Southern Railway will meet in the final its traditional rival Integral Coach Factory, which edged past Food Corporation of India, Chennai 2-0 in the other semi-final match.

Ramesh Babu scored the first goal in the third minute off a cross from Hyath in the third minute and Hyath scored a gem of a goal with a solo effort in the 33rd minute.

Earlier in the morning, a hat-trick by Arumugam helped Southern Railway defeat host Reserve Line Sports Club 4-1 in the quarterfinals. The other goal for Railway was scored by Gautham. Kathiravan scored the only goal for the host.

Selection trials

Trials for the selection of the Madurai District under-15 and under-17 teams will be held at M.G.R. Race Course Stadium at 2.30 p.m on July 24.
