Corrections and clarifications

* The sentence in "No timeframe for solving issues on CST phase out: Chidambaram" (Tamil Nadu, July 17, 2006) was: "The country had been exporting 1,000 tonnes of yellow metal [gold] per annum he said and pointed out that the price was being controlled by international market." A reader wondered whether this was correct. It was a reporting error. The Ministry of Finance clarifies that it should have been "importing".

* Referring to the news item "Australia getting set to export coal to State" (Andhra Pradesh, July 20, 2006) which mentions an "ultra mega" project with an installed capacity of 4,000 mw and another a 1,600 mw plant, a reader points out that the correct abbreviation is MW (megawatt = one million watts). The unit mW (milliwatt) is one-thousandth of a watt. And when a unit is named after a person (James Watt, in this instance), the unit symbol should be in capitals (like W). When it is spelt out in full, the first letter of the unit should be in lower case (like watt).

* In "A progressive online initiative" (Editorial page, July 17, 2006), it was stated that It [Kerala] is the first State in the country to harness the potential of the internet to make the process [Centralised Allotment Process for allotting professional course seats] more student-friendly and efficient. A student from Haryana contested this, saying that the Haryana Government had followed this procedure before Kerala. Mr. Ajit Mohan Sharan, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Technical Education, Haryana, has clarified that Haryana has indeed had an online admissions process this year, in association with the National Informatics Centre, although it does not include MBBS admissions. The first phase of the process was from July 9 to 14. In Kerala it started one day later, on July 10, and is still under way. We had stated that Kerala was the first to do so, on the strength of the statement by Kerala's Minister for Education. We had also checked with the National Informatics Centre in Kerala.
