CHENNAI: A national conference on mobile computing - localisation and standardisation, to be held at Velammal Engineering College near Chennai on Saturday, will see experts from different fields providing inputs that will focus on standardising the use of Tamil over mobile phones, especially for SMS and other value-added services. An optimal Tamil layout for cell phones, designing of the keypad on mobile phones for the Tamil alphabet, text messaging engine, predictive texting for SMS (such as the T9 dictionary) and standardising terminologies will be some of the topics discussed at the meeting. The inaugural session will feature speeches by IT Secretary of the State C. Chandramouli, special officer in the Directorate of e-Governance Atul Anand, and functionaries of the Kani Tamizh Sangam (a forum of Tamil computing enthusiasts), besides M. Anandakrishnan, a former IT advisor to the State, V. Sankaranarayanan, Director, Tamil Virtual University (one of the prime movers of the conference), and M.V. Muthuramalingam and M.V. Velmurugan, representing the Velammal educational group. There will be three technical sessions where experts would share their ideas. Those interested in participating in the meet can call the Secretary of Kani Thamizh Sangam at 9444075051.
