MADURAI: Madurai Kamaraj University detected a fake marksheet of B.Com. degree here on Wednesday. A candidate of the Madurai Kamaraj University's distance education centre in Mumbai applied for the award of degree by producing a bogus statement of marks, which did not match with university records. It was detected that the final year marks statement was fabricated in Mumbai and almost `looked similar' to an original one. "The candidate fled the scene soon after the officials smelt foul play leaving behind the fake marks statement. In fact, the examination records showed that he did not appear for one paper and it was for that subject he gave himself the marks", senior officials told The Hindu after a preliminary enquiry.According to authorities, the candidate belonging to the April 2004 batch failed in the paper- Industrial Organisation (code AD2) - and the MKU records showed that he did not clear the examination. However, he gave himself 78 marks while he actually got only 61 marks in that combined paper, officials said and added that he came to the university on Tuesday to apply for the degree certificate. "When he gave the mark-sheet asking for the degree certificate, we asked him to wait. As we found the mark-sheet to be a fake one, he escaped from the campus", officials said. The university records showed that he passed in all papers in the first and the second year, but had not cleared only one paper in the final year. Meanwhile, the vigilance wing in the university swung in to action to detect the `actual connections' at Mumbai and the possible role of some Mumbai-based individuals in the fake marks statement issue. When contacted, the MKU Vice-Chancellor, P. Maruthamuthu, said he had directed the Registrar and the Controller of Examinations to probe the matter and also contact the personnel at the Mumbai centre for further details.
