Letters to the Editor
The exit of Brazil from the World Cup has shattered the hopes of several die-hard soccer lovers. That the defending champions went down tamely to a team that was not even expected to make the knockout round speaks greatly to the French comeback. Brazil paid the price for not taking the opponent seriously. If the samba magic is to return, ageing players need to be replaced.
V.J. Lawrence,
* * * The reigning champions have been brought to their knees by the French! Their convincing 1-0 win over the Brazilians has converted the World Cup into another European Cup championship.
V.R. Shankar,
* * * The Brazil-France quarterfinal was a classic example of what happens when a team assumes it is unassailable. With Ronaldo and Ronaldinho strolling aimlessly on the field, winning the championship was wishful thinking. The performance of Brazil was lacklustre except against Japan.
Nisha Philip,
* * * The pain and anguish at the exit of Latin American giants as they cross the Atlantic empty handed is resonating across continents. The samba boys have only themselves to blame for their lacklustre performance. One cannot but be amazed by the mystique of Zinedine Zidane who proved to the world that he is a force to reckon with in the twilight of his career. He played more Brazilian football than his opponents.
Yasmin Banu,
