Election campaign ends in Krishna district on a peaceful note

Special Correspondent

Congress, TDP main contenders for panchayat raj posts

VIJAYAWADA: With just a four-day campaign, all political parties in Krishna district shut off the mikes in the process of electioneering for the panchayat raj bodies on Monday evening in accordance with the deadline fixed by the State Election Commission.

While the election will be fought mainly by the Congress and the TDP, the CPI(M) entered the fray in six zilla parishad territorial constituencies (ZPTCs) with the support of the TDP. Though the Congress had poll alliance with the CPI, it had not allotted even a single ZPTC to the latter. Instead, it is contesting all the 49 ZPTC seats, while the TDP is fighting only 43 seats. The Congress promised to give two co-opted memberships to the CPI after the formation of the ZP general body. The CPI might also get three mandal parishad presidencies, in the event of the combine making it in those mandals.

The ZP chair is reserved for BC (general). The choice of the Congress candidates for the coveted ZP chairman's post is almost finalised. However, the official announcement comes only after the formation of the general body. Kukkala Nageswara Rao, the party contestant from Movva ZPTC seat in Nidumolu Assembly constituency, is the hot favourite for the post. Former MP K.P.Reddaiah, who is seeking election from Thotlavallur ZPTC, is also in the race.

The election will be held for 833 mandal parishad territorial constituencies also. While 141 candidates are contesting for the 49 ZPTCs, 1,947 candidates are trying their luck in the MPTC elections.

Security arrangements

The district administration and the police deployed the necessary staff to all the 2,504 polling stations. Special security arrangements were made in the 325 hypersensitive and 343 sensitive villages.

Commissioner of city police Umesh Sharraf and Superintendent of Police of Krishna district Murugesh Kumar Singh will be overseeing the security arrangements, while district election authority and Collector Navin Mittal and Joint Collector-cum-Returning Officer S. Suresh Kumar will be supervising the conduct of the poll. Ballot boxes and ballot papers are being despatched to the respective centres.
