Sharath in quarterfinals

New Delhi: A. Sharath Kamal defeated Joao Monteiro of Portugal to storm into the men's quarterfinal of the Brazil Open table tennis championship at Sao Paulo. Sharath carved out a 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 win to make it to the last-eight stage where he will meet Christophe Bertin of France.

Earlier, Sharath, ranked 124 in world, started his campaign with a 11-4, 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 10-12, 11-7 victory over qualifier Cazuo Matsumoto of Brazil.

In men's doubles, the pair of India's Subhajit Saha and Carlos Machado of Spain lost to Jonas Jakab and Daniel Zwickil of Hungary 7-11, 7-11, 6-11, 8-11 in the first round. — PTI
