Tharoor calls on Manmohan

NEW DELHI: Shashi Tharoor, India's candidate for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday. A spokesman for the Prime Minister described the meeting as a "courtesy call".

Mr. Tharoor, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday night, was formally nominated for the post last week by the Government ahead of informal consultations with candidates and members of the U.N. Security Council.

Mr. Tharoor, currently U.N. Under Secretary-General for Communication and Public Information, also met CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat on Monday. He is scheduled to meet Opposition leader L.K. Advani .
