News Analysis
The sentence in "U.S. envoy warns of violent backlash" ("International", June 9, 2006) was: "Of 198 deputies present in the 275-seat Assembly, 182 voted for Mr. Bolani while 142 supported Mr. Jassim, the Speaker said." The reference was to how the Iraqi Parliament approved Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's candidates for Defence (Abdel Qader Jassim) and Interior Ministers (Jawad al-Bolani). A reader wondered whether there was an error, as the numbers did not tally. There were two elections, where 182 members voted for al-Bolani as Interior Minister, and 142 voted for Jassim as Defence Minister. A reader from Lucknow points out that the heading of the report "35 die as bus falls into khud" (Delhi, "From the States", June 14, 2006, page 5) is incorrect. The text said the vehicle was a truck. A sentence in the same report was incomplete because of an editing error. It was: "Overloading, rash driving or drunken driving have resulted in a large number of accidents in the [Almora] region over the past three in which over 2,000 persons, mostly pilgrims and tourists, have been killed." It should have been "past three years". In the Reuters report "Trescothick hits century" ("Sport", June 14, 2006), a reader says there is confusion over the official status of the England-Ireland one-day match. The first paragraph said that it was a one-day international (ODI), while the last one stated that it was a warm-up match for the Englishmen. Warm-up matches are not accorded official status, says the reader. It was an official ODI although it was treated as a warm-up match by England ahead of its ODI series against Sri Lanka.
