Life-term for custodial death

Sangrur (Punjab): Six policemen, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, were today sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here that had convicted them for the custodial death of a youth.

Additional Sessions Judge D.S. Malwai sentenced six personnel of the Sherpur police station - DSP Gurjit Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) Kulwinder Singh, Additional SHO Yudhishter Singh, Head Constable Chamkaur Singh and Constables Sohan Singh and Mukhtiar Singh - to rigorous imprisonment for life after holding them guilty of murdering Ravinder Singh of village Kalabula in the district in 2004.

The accused were also fined Rs. 1000 each and would be sentenced to another six months if they failed to pay.

Additional sentence

Justice Malwai also sentenced the accused to 10 years in jail and fined them an additional Rs.1000 each for kidnapping the youth.

The six were further sentenced for six months for wrongful confinement besides another three months of RI for unlawful assembly.

All the sentences shall run concurrently, the court observed. According to the prosecution, Ravinder was picked up by the police from his house and tortured to death on January 18, 2004 in Sherpur police station. — PTI
