Wen Ho Lee
Washington: The U.S. Government and five major media organisations in the country have agreed to pay $1.65 million to former nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee to drop a lawsuit he filed claiming violation of privacy by leaks that portrayed him as a spy. While the Government will pay $895,000 to Mr. Lee, the target of a Federal investigation in 1999 for allegedly spying for China while working in a laboratory in New Mexico, the media houses will pay him a combined amount of $750,000. U.S. authorities have, however, made it clear that the money to Mr. Lee is not to be deemed as damages. It would rather cover court costs and tax money that the scientist will pay as a result of the settlement. The move comes amidst concerns that their reporters will have to come up with the names of these sources. PTI
