  • Both to be commissioned on June 7
  • 75-horse power pump to be installed on the main pipeline

Tuticorin: The district administration has planned to complete repair work in the entire water distribution pipeline network before June 6, to ensure supply of drinking water to 29,328 households here on alternate days from mid-June.

Collector R. Palaniyandi said leaks at 30 places in the distribution pipeline from the pumping station at Vallanadu to the town had been detected and repair work to plug the holes was under way on a war footing.

"Of the 30 points, 22 were found between Pottal Urani junction and Vagaikulam, and the remaining on pipeline passing along Pudukottai bypass."

Once the leaks were set right, two more mld (million litres per day) could be supplied in addition to 20 mld reaching the town at present.

To augment the water supply, two infiltration wells were being dug at Vallanandu and both would be commissioned on June 7. "We would draw five mld of water from these wells, which would enable us to provide water at the rate of 90 litres per capita per day, to the entire town," he said. On other measures to strengthen water supply, he said a 75-horse power pump would be installed on the main pipeline that constituted the first scheme of distribution introduced in 1932 to boost supply.

    Solid waste disposal

He said awareness campaigns would be conducted on ill effects of littering of plastic waste, especially use-and-throw cups, as part of efforts to beautify the town and remove clogs in the drainage.

"We would strictly enforce Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, for effective disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, as part of sanitation campaign." He said instructions had been given to municipal administration to closely monitor whether segregation of waste into dry and wet waste was taking place at the ward level as per guidelines.
