BANGALORE: H.T. Sangliana, Bangalore North MP, is about to fulfil a promise he made during the Lok Sabha election in 2004: reconstruction of Bagalur Road connecting National Highway (NH) 4 (Hoskote) and NH 7 (Yelahanka), which was in poor condition for years.

He secured funds for the project from the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.

Although the upper limit for funds for projects under the scheme is Rs. 50 lakhs, Mr. Sangliana convinced the Union Government to provide Rs. 1.25 crore. People helped implement the project, and a group of retired chief engineers, including Bore Gowda and T.J. Das, gave suggestions. The reconstruction of the road, which began on June 1, 2005, is nearing completion, and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is likely to open the road for traffic on June 1 this year.

The reconstruction of the road has mainly benefited people from over 40 villages, who regularly take the road to reach Yelahanka, Hoskote, and the city, Mr. Sangliana, who took presspersons to the project spot on Monday, said.

He said the 12.5-km road, which was 7.5-m wide, was built to national highway specifications. There was no compromise on quality, he said. "I am happy with the work," he said and hoped the road would facilitate the development of villages in the region.
