CHENNAI: The AIADMK councillors have demanded the dismissal of Deputy Mayor R. Thiagarajan and want to table a resolution to the effect when the Chennai Corporation council convenes on Tuesday.

Party's floor leader in Corporation council V. Sukumar Babu, in a letter submitted to the Corporation Commissioner on Wednesday, recalled that Mr. Thiagarajan had been missing from the city from September 2005 to April 2006.

`Lost credibility'

"He was not there to receive petitions from the public on grievance day meetings during the period. Despite being the Deputy Mayor, he was not here to serve the people when the city suffered during the floods. He has lost his credibility," Mr. Sukumar Babu has noted.

Further referring to various interviews given by Mr. Thiagarajan during his months away from the city in which he said he was staying abroad, Mr. Sukumar Babu pointed out that according to law, all councillors had to take the permission of the Corporation council and the State Government before leaving the country.

The proposed resolution states: "Mr. Thiagarajan had not attended three consecutive meetings — on November 21, February 1 and February 2 — and that he had lost the confidence of a majority of councillors after he had left the city and his office without informing anyone. So the council is suggesting Mr. Thiagarajan's dismissal."

Resolution forwarded

Mr. Sukumar Babu has forwarded the resolution to Mr. Thiagarajan's office on Thursday.

The Deputy Mayor has to table the agenda for the council meeting and it remains to be seen if he will include the resolution.
