Stress on curbing rights violations

Staff Reporter

New Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee takes charge

CHENNAI : The new Director-General of Police, D. Mukherjee, on Thursday said care would be taken to ensure that human rights were not violated while enforcing law and order in the State.

The police force's renowned tradition would be continued, but with an emphasis on preventing human rights violations, he said after taking charge from K.P. Jain, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.

Aware of complaints

Fresh from his stint as DG (Investigation) of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Mukherjee told mediapersons that he was aware of the nature of various complaints that came to the NHRC despite his short tenure. The police would follow the necessary procedures and guidelines, including the steps to be taken while taking people into custody.

Protection to all

The DGP also said protection would be given to all sections of the population, in response to a question about alleged harassment of All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party members.

Mr. Mukherjee, a 1971 Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer hailing from Bihar, was earlier Additional Director (Anti Corruption), CBI, New Delhi.

He went on deputation to the Centre in 2004 after his tenure as member of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.

Mr. Mukherjee was brought back to the State as DGP in place of A.X. Alexander immediately after the new Government took over.
